F9 E1 on a Maytag washer is a long drain. Front load and top load models each have their own checks.
What this code means
F9 E1
F9 E1 is a long drain, meaning the washer is unable to drain correctly.
F9 E1 tells you the washer is taking too long to drain. It appears on both front load and top load Maytag washers, and the checks differ a little between the two.
Front load washers
The display means drain times are longer than expected, typically over 8 minutes. Maytag points to these checks:
- Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or clogged, and use the U-shaped drain hose form.
- Keep the hose from extending more than 4.5″ (113 mm) into the drainpipe or laundry tub, so drained water cannot siphon back.
- Do not seal the hose into the drainpipe with tape. It should be loose yet secure, with a gap for air.
- Standpipe height is 96″ maximum and 39″ minimum.
- On some models, clean the drain pump filter behind the bottom dispenser drawer.
- Clean the small drain holes inside the door seal (bellow) if they are clogged.
- Use HE detergent, since excess suds can slow draining.
Top load washers
Here the water level does not change after the drain pump is on. Check that the drain hose is not pushed too far down into the standpipe beyond the elbow, which can cause siphoning or slow or no spin. Leave the drain hose form as it came from the factory and do not tape the hose to the drain pipe. Straighten a kinked hose and clear any blockage from the drainpipe or utility sink.
