What this code means
C82
The surface cooking area has overheated and the automatic shutoff was activated.
C82 on a Maytag electric cooktop comes with an overheated surface cooking area and an automatic shutoff. Maytag starts the checklist with the cookware, so look there first.
Is the right cookware on the burner?
A pan that is the wrong size, or one that is empty or dry, can be behind the code. Size, material and position all matter for getting full wattage. Maytag describes ideal cookware as having a smooth flat bottom, straight sides and a well-fitting lid, in a medium-to-heavy material.
- The base diameter should match the surface cooking area.
- A smaller pan should not be more than 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) smaller than the cooking area.
- A larger pan should not stick out more than 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) beyond it.
- Never cook with a pan that is empty or has boiled dry.
Then cool down and reset
Turn off the oven if it is running. Wait 5 minutes for the cooktop to cool, turn it back on and verify operation. If C82 persists, switch off the circuit breaker(s) for one minute, switch them on again and monitor the cooktop for one minute.
