- Cooktop
C81 or C83 on a Maytag electric cooktop points to overheating and an automatic shutoff. Check airflow, let it cool, then reset power.
What this code means
C81 / C83
The cooktop has overheated and the automatic shutoff was activated.
On a Maytag electric cooktop, C81 or C83 on the display means the cooktop has overheated. The surface cooking area got too hot and the automatic shutoff was activated.
Steps from Maytag’s product help
- Turn all surface controls to OFF.
- Make sure nothing is limiting airflow to the bottom of the cooktop. When the cooktop is not installed above an oven, open the cabinet doors and check for items restricting airflow, then move them away from the bottom of the cooktop.
- Turn off the oven if it is operating.
- Wait 5 minutes for the cooktop to cool down, turn it back on and verify operation.
Reset the power
If the code comes back, turn off the circuit breaker(s) for the cooktop for one minute, then turn them on again. Watch the cooktop for one minute to confirm the code does not return, and verify cooktop operation.
