SUD, Sud or Sd on a Maytag washer all point to the same thing: too many suds in the machine. What the washer does next depends on whether it is a front load or a top load model.

Front load washers

The washer cannot spin out water while excess suds are present. So it automatically extends the rinse time, pausing the tumbling and adding water for additional rinsing. The pause lets the bubbles break, and it may occur several times.

• Use HE (High Efficiency) detergent, and follow the detergent maker’s dosage for soil level and load size.
• If you used “no splash” or “easy pour” liquid chlorine bleach, it contains a thickening agent that can create excess suds. Switch to regular liquid bleach products.
• Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or clogged. A restricted drain hose or standpipe (drainpipe) can also bring up the code.

Top load washers

Excess suds trigger a suds reduction routine, and the washer should be allowed to continue. Always use HE High-Efficiency Detergent.
