AF on a Maytag dryer signals restricted air flow from a clogged lint screen or vent; clean and check the vent run.
What this code means
AF
Restricted Air Flow: clogged lint screen or vent.
An AF (Restricted Air Flow) code means a clogged lint screen or vent. Possible vent faults include a crushed or kinked run, or one with too many turns. AF does not stop the dryer; a press of any key wipes the code and the display goes back to the estimated time remaining.
Maytag’s checks
- Empty and clean the lint screen.
- Look along the vent run between the dryer and the wall for crushing or kinks.
- Make sure no lint or debris sits in that run.
- Do the same for the exterior vent exhaust hood.
- Compare the vent system with the recommended run length and number of elbows for your vent type; the Installation Instructions give the details.
After that, restart on a Timed Dry heated cycle. A message that stays calls for a venting specialist to clean the entire home venting run.
Other dryer codes
- E1: separate code from this dryer line, where only reset steps are given
- 6E: another entry in the dryer code list
